Fast Food Has A Culture All Its Own

It doesn’t matter if you’re hungry for a Glasgow delivery food take out service for your Chinese food or Indian carry outs all you need is a card and a phone. These day you can pre-register your debit and credit card on a website so that you don’t even need to call, just fill in the details of what you’re after, click submit and half an hour later your food is walking up to your door.

I remember the days when you had to walk to the fish shop and order it from the man. The one near where my grandparents lived was a tall ginger man with few teeth whose sideburns came almost to his chin. He still wrapped up the fish and chips in real newspaper, the chips would come in a little paper bag and they’d always stick to the insides.

The one near where I lived with my parents was owned bya shorter, father man who reminded me of Alf Roberts from Coronation Street. His black hair was always slicked back with brylcreem and the windows were always running with condensation.

Back then, in the 1970s Chinese food was still regarded as extremely exotic notwithstanding we had no idea what it was supposed to taste like. Egg fried rice with sweet and sour pork was the acme of exotic fine dining from a tin foil pot!

Chicken Korma caused controversy when voted Britain’s favourite dish recently, when people think of British takeaway food they think of fish and chips yet the first Indian restaurant opened in Britain fifty years before the first chip shop, they had to wait for chips to be invented while soldiers and employees of the British East India Company had been coming home for years with a taste for the exotic that they had developed while they served in the far off subcontinent. These days Wandsworth takeaways can offer more choice than was available throughout the whole country just a few years ago
