Merlot is one of the world’s most flavored red wines which is made from Merlot grapes. Due to it’s smooth and fruity characteristics, Merlot wine is the premier choice among seasoned wine hobbyists and the popular introductory wine for new tasters.

Merlot is basically a kind of red grape that is used for blending grape as well as for varietal wines. The flavor of the wine ranges from red cherries to purple plums. The Merlot type of wine is low in tannin as compared to Cabernet Sauvignon and as such used to soften the Cabernet in bordeaux blends.

Merlot is able to mature in regions which are cooler than those required for Cabernet Sauvignon. The best Merlot comes from Washington State, Napa and Sonoma valleys, Chile and of course from Bordeaux, France.

Merlot wines tend to be soft, fruity and smooth in texture. The wine is actually a perfect blend of vegetables, floral, herbs and fruits and thus gives the earthy tastes and aromas. It is sometime aged in oak to give it a smoky and woodsy flavor.

The Merlot wine can be served slightly below the room temperature. When it reaches 74 degreesF, it is likely to cause an unpleasant sharpness in the taste. You can cool the bottle for around 15-20 minutes in the refrigerator to reach the desired serving temperature.

Merlot is extremely versatile when it comes to food pairing options. Pork, red meats, pastas or salads goes really well with Merlot. Merlot wine can be used in many recipes by the cooks. For example, it can be added from chili to stews to meat marinades, sauces or seasonings. It’s such a versatile wine that it can be enjoyed as casual picnics and formal affairs.
